Where to File a Moving Complaint

If a mover broke the rules — a hostage load, a cloned USDOT number, a blank Bill of Lading, or a bill far above a binding estimate — here is exactly where to turn.

Federal channels (interstate moves)

FMCSA National Consumer Complaint Database

File against interstate household-goods carriers. Hotline 1-888-368-7238. fmcsa.dot.gov complaint portal.

U.S. DOT Office of Inspector General

For fraud, ransom of goods, or criminal patterns. Hotline 1-800-424-9071. oig.dot.gov.

FBI IC3

If wire fraud or interstate ransom is involved. ic3.gov.

State channel (intrastate moves & licensing)

Most intrastate moves are regulated by a state agency, not FMCSA. Pick your state to jump to its regulator and complaint portal:

Every state page lists the regulator, license lookup, and the exact online/phone/mail complaint path.

Build your complaint file

  1. Collect the written estimate, Bill of Lading, inventory, and all photos/dates.
  2. Note the USDOT or state license number shown on paperwork and on the truck.
  3. Send a certified demand letter (use our Complaint Letter Template).
  4. File with the correct agency above; include the mover's authority number.
  5. If goods are being held hostage, call FMCSA and OIG immediately.
Act fast

Some state remedies and chargeback windows are time-limited. Document everything the day of the move.
