Storage is the line item households add on impulse and forget. This guide frames when it pays off, the options, and the factors that decide which one.
When storage actually helps
- A gap between lease-end and move-in (the single most common reason).
- Downsizing or staging a home for sale — fewer visible items sell faster.
- A long-distance move where the truck arrives after you do.
- Holding seasonal or sentimental items you are not ready to part with.

- Access — self-storage and portable let you in; mover vaults often do not until redelivery.
- Duration — a few weeks favors portable or vault; many months favor the cheapest self-storage unit you can secure.
- Climate — wood, electronics, art, and documents want climate control on long holds.
- Hidden fees — admin fees, insurance requirements, and redelivery charges can double the advertised monthly rate.
Model it before you commit
